Rob was born in 1968 in Thornbury, near Bristol. After 6 weeks he decided to move to Hertfordshire 'a much nicer area…' His Dad had one Beatles & one Elvis tape in the car, so up to the age of 10, Rob got to know these songs quite well. He got his first (toy) drum kit when he was 6 & a proper one at 13 years old. At this time Rob also taught himself guitar and first learnt that 'Smoke on the water' riff. He continued as a drummer up until the age of 17, playing in several school rock bands.
It was at a Level 42 gig in the 90's at Crystal Palace Bowl, where incredibly, Rob set fire to their on-stage monitoring desk, due to an over enthusiastic fire-breathing performance…and of course was congratulated…fond memories then. In the audience that day were many alarmed people, but also his mate Ed Poole (Bonnie Tyler's bass player), who later that year gave him a few lessons in bass & fire safety procedures.
After that episode he joined 'Jackwoods' a fine five-piece guitar band from South London, who wrote great songs & gigged in all the usual London venues, like the Dublin Castle, Monarch, Falcon, Water Rats & LA2. Whilst playing (bass) in Jackwoods, Rob started to pay much closer attention to song structures, melodies, harmonies & dynamics and began writing his own songs.
As a young boy he was subjected to subtle mind control techniques
by his older brother Peter, so the likes of ELP, Floyd & Zappa
registered in his brain…somewhere, along with his own influences
such as The Beatles, Elvis, The Police, Duran Duran, Crowded House/Finn
Brothers, Oasis, Peter & The Wolf…Rob does write songs for himself,
he does want people to like them, but if they don't, he says they
simply have no taste! |
